Techniques of word order for emphasis

EXPLANATION

Introduction

In English, word order is rigid (subject – verb – object), meaning you usually rely on intonation to create emphasis. In Slovak, however, because the syntactic word order is flexible, word order itself is the primary tool for emphasis.

Techniques

1, Emphatic fronting

In a neutral sentence, the most important new information naturally drifts toward the end of the sentence. If you want to heavily spotlight a specific element, you rip it out of its normal position and place it at the very beginning of the sentence.

Včera som kúpil nové auto (normal word order)

Nové auto som kúpil včera (emphatic fronting)

2, Pronoun activation

Slovak normally drops personal pronouns because the verb ending already tells you who is acting. If you deliberately insert the pronoun, it creates an immediate, sharp focus on the person.

Neviem to (neutral)

Ja to neviem (pronoun activation)

3, Emphatic adjective inversion

Normally, adjectives precede nouns (výborný výlet). Shifting the adjective behind the noun breaks the standard rhythm and creates a dramatic, rhetorical, or slightly ironic punch.

To je hrozná situácia (normal word order)

To je situácia hrozná (Emphatic adjective inversion)

4, Focus particles

Words like len (only), iba (only), predsa (after all), … must sit right next to what they emphasize. Changing their position changes the entire meaning of the sentence.

Peter mal iba 3€ (emphasis on 3€)

Iba Peter mal 3€ (emphasis on Peter)

DIALOGUE

Majo, my máme obrovský problém s tým novým klientom! Všetko je zlé.

Ja za to ale nemôžem!

Ale no tak, tú zmluvu si mala podpísať predsa ty.

Ja som mala kontrolovať iba text. Celé to predsa mal schváliť šéf.

Toto je situácia neuveriteľná. Veď on je na dovolenke.

To nie je moja chyba, že šéf neodpovedá na správy.

Nikto iný len ty si mala skontrolovať celý dokument predtým, než odišiel.

Ja som urobila presne to, čo som mala urobiť.

Nevadí, skúsime to opraviť a spojíme sa so šéfom.

Áno, tak to bude najlepšie.
