Isn´t learning a foreign language useless, especially in an era of AI and technology where you can translate everything instantly in a few clicks? After all, the times have changed so much that you don´t even have to open a translator anymore and manually translate what the other person is saying. All you need to have is a pair of wireless headphones that translate in real time. Despite all this, it still makes perfect sense to learn a foreign language and even a small one like Slovak. In this article I will give you 5 reasons why choosing Slovak is still a good idea.

1. Unlock authentic travel experiences

Slovakia remains one of Europe´s best-kept secrets, offering medieval castles, dramatic mountain ranges with breathtaking views, unique culture and much more. Despite being a gem, it is an off-the-beaten-path destination for many. This poses an advantage for travellers that want to see the beauty of Slovakia without crowds. Speaking Slovak spices up the experience.

2. Slovakia is an ideal country to live in

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear about Slovakia? Is it car factories, rich culture or something else? The truth is Slovakia has a lot to offer. Tourist places, rightly so, are a huge hook for first-time visitors. For the ones that decide to settle down and spend some time here it might be our hospitality, rich culture or safety. People come from different countries and therefore what they prefer differs.

3. It is the ultimate gateway to slavic languages

Slovak sits right at the heart of the Slavic language family, giving it a unique structural advantage. It has high intelligibility with Czech or Polish and speaking it opens doors to studying other languages too. Many linguists consider Slovak to be the sort of  lingua franca of Slavic languages due to its clear pronunciation and large mutual vocabulary with many other slavic languages.

4. It is surprisingly logical and phonetic

When you think of a Slavic language what comes to your mind? Complicated grammar rules and difficult vocabulary are among the main reasons foreigners usually mention. Did you know that the opposite is true? Even though its case system takes time to learn, Slovak follows logical patterns and rules that make it easier for foreigners to master it. Besides, once you know how to pronounce every letter of the alphabet, you can read pretty much anything.

5. You stand out from the crowd

While millions of people study Spanish, English, French or German knowing Slovak makes you uniquely memorable. It is considered a rare language that immediately catches the eye of recruiters going through hundreds of resumes every day. It is a fairly uncommon language to speak, especially outside of Europe, which could be a nice conversation starter as well.

6. Bonus: Have a secret language

Last but not least, I have one more reason why Slovak is a good choice. Due to its uniqueness you will quickly realize that it can serve as a secret language too. Its intelligebility with traditional western languages like English or Spanish is very low, which allows you to use it without other people understanding what you are saying. Let´s be blunt, you must have had a moment in your life when you needed to talk to someone about something private or embarrassing but didn´t do it because of feeling weird around other people. Well, let me show you the solution – using Slovak 🙂

And there you have it, 5 + 1 reasons why learning Slovak is a good idea. Have I managed to convince you to take up Slovak? If yes, you can click right here and get started.
